Doc.  Yahoo's best defense is to do what the TV world can't do:  tie payment to performance and provide consumers with the information they need to make high quality decisions.  This is finally a way to provide both consumers and advertisers with a medium that makes "everyone" happy.  Yet, Yahoo won't make that vision a reality.

They went for the easy money of impression-based advertising.  Too bad.

Scoble is onto something with his link to "Errorwear."  I like this one best (think about all of the times you have seen this bsod -- or its equivalent -- since 1983).  This is a great gift for my brothers.

More September 11th stuff.  3-D damage report on NYC.  It would be interesting to see a 3-D high quality mock-up of the disaster.

B-1 crash.   You can survive an airplane mishap.   I have been through two.  A water mishap make things more complicated.  Good luck guys.

>``At approximately 11:30 EST today, an Air Force B-1 bomber went down in the Indian Ocean, approximately 30 miles north of Diego Garcia,'' Pentagon spokeswoman Victoria Clarke said. ''There were no known casualties, rescue efforts are under way and we have no indications as to the cause,'' she said. U.S. planes have been launching attacks over Afghanistan from the British air base on Diego Garcia.<

Palm acquires ThinAirApps for $19 m in stock.  For better or worse, the Palm is a desktop PC companion.  That was the innovation I immediately saw when I got a prerelease version years ago.

In order to grow their customer base, Palm needs to be innovative on the desktop.  That means they first need to build new desktop apps that allow people to do new things (my suggestion is Weblogging).  The connection to a Palm device would extend the use of that new app.  In that way, Palm would be able to position itself as the only company that supports this new software rather than being an also ran.  FWIW, pureplay connections between rich data and palms without the use of the PC is a loser.

Wired.  The new Security Tax.  The Pentagon has successfully blocked the release by NASA of a new detailed 3-D topographical map of the world -- due to security issues.

WSJ.  Bush names panel of technology advisors that will make specific policy recommendations.

>His appointees are to include: (Steve Case of AOL), Michael Dell of Dell Computer Corp.; Gordon Moore, chairman emeritus of Intel Corp.; Carol Bartz, CEO of Autodesk Inc.; Steve Burke, president of Comcast Corp. and Norman Augustine, retired chairman of Lockheed Martin Corp. The panel is to include several scientists, the officials said.

The president will ask them to "come up with specific policy initiatives," a senior White House aide said.

At the meeting Wednesday, the president plans to request advice in four specific areas. He wants input on the best and most cost-effective ways to speed up the development and usage of broadband technology. Mr. Bush's aides are said to be close to finalizing a list of principles to be unveiled in mid-January that would include funding and tax breaks to speed up deployment. The president is likely to talk about this proposal in his State of the Union address, these aides said.<

I don't know about you but the Lord of the Rings sounds, from the reviews it is getting, that it will be the biggest film of the decade.  Given the quality of the material it is likely that it will outshine Star Wars by a large margin.

One thing I would like to see happen: I would like to see a complete flash driven Web application devoted to this topic that runs on my desktop (built on a content management system).  All the heavy elements: film clips, audio and video interviews, and flash games would be donwloaded in the background (by an app running in the task bar that connects to Web services or enclosures).  The app would also have discussion groups, a personal movie focused Weblog, and IM chat (Web services mediated).  It would be an app that would live and grow on my desktop throughout the next three years as the next movies are released.
