WSJ. Israel calls off a Gaza invasion. Reason: opposition by the Israeli military. The military is starting to excercise its political muscle against excessive political demands for unbounded retaliation. The wildfire of a break with history begins in earnest:
>>>In Tel Aviv, an estimated 60,000 protesters clogged a downtown square Saturday night and called for complete withdrawal from the West Bank and Gaza. It was the largest public gathering by Israel's peace camp in more than a year.<<<

BBC. Sharon loses crucial party vote. The Likud party votes against any Palestinian state. This is insane. This is the only policy that will eventually result in the absolute and utter destruction of Israel. Isreal could write its own ticket right now, but it selects a policy where it protects things it has already lost: the settlements. This is very wrong. Perhaps Israel is a victim of the tarpit of history. It can't break away and become more. Unless you can break with history and THINK, as an individual and as a people (adapt to changing circumstances), you are done and buried in the new world.
>>>"We must root out terror and then move towards peace with the Palestinians governing themselves. But we must not give them powers of sovereignty that could allow them to destroy us," he said (Mr Netanyahu). <<<
