CNet.  Very critical article on Telematics.  Main problem:  cars don't have a modular approach for upgrades to electronics.  Big goof by lots of research firms like Forrester that boosted the topic last year.

Kurzweil on Wolfram's book.  Overstated and repetitive of previous conclusions made by others.

NYT.  Human cloning debate turns to patents (those pesky intellectual property critters are in all the hots spots).

>>>Senator Sam Brownback, the Kansas Republican who has been a leading opponent of human cloning, said he intended to introduce a bill to prohibit patents on human beings and human embryos, which he said were "akin to slavery."  "I think the patent office will appreciate having that clarity, given the applications that are coming into the patent office," Mr. Brownback said... But even a patent on the process of cloning humans could give the patent holder some rights over people, some lawyers said. Conceivably, for instance, the university could bar people created overseas by its cloning process from entering the country. <<<

NYT.  Krugman.  GAAP reform.  The S&P will now "correct" financial statements made by US companies it tracks to weed out abuse.   This is a service that will be in high demand. It is expected to cut reported corporate earnings by 25% when put into place.

>>>As David Blitzer, S.&P.'s chief investment strategist, recently wrote, "Financial markets are as much a social contract as is democratic government." Yet there is a growing sense that this contract is being broken, undermining the trust that is so essential to the operation of financial markets. Clearly, major reforms are needed.<<<
