Wow. When I started using Skype, there were only 5,000 simultaneous users. That was one week ago. Now there are over 30,000 simultaneous users. In general, the positive reviews focus on sound quality, low bandwidth usage, and the ability to penetrate firewalls.

Discover. Will immersive cyberspace be composed mainly of Mirror worlds or a Fantasy islands (there.com and gameneverending are new entrants in the fantasy island space)? My bet is on Fantasy islands that increasingly become real-world focused. These fantasy islands will become huge. Mirror worlds will behind the firwall, fragmented, and geared towards a specific task. One reason is that most good real-time real-world data (the type that Gelernter wants to include in his mirror worlds) is private and will remain so. Here is an interesting snippet that shows the power of fantasy islands:
Edward Castronova, an economics professor at California State University at Fullerton, recently calculated that the per capita gross national product of the land of Norrath—part of the Everquest universe (everquest. station. sony.com)—was $2,266, which is on a par with the per capita GNP of Russia.

I am still trying to wrap my head around how to turn FOAF (Friend of a Friend) into a viral tool that can compete with Friendster (Paljunction is another one). Others are thinking about this too. The objective would be to keep the FOAF info open and let mulitple companies compete for the interface. Eventually, however, I suspect that the IM players are going to absorb this functionality and blow away all of the Web interface players, so if we can get the data in an open format, we can get interoperability.

I have been playing with the Weboutliner demo (I wish Doug had done this when he was at UserLand, LOL) and it is very cool. I want this for my weblog (but I want it on the desktop)! (Note: It does look like it is based on Radio, but I think the intent of the team is to do it server side). Marc has big plans for this tool (his blogroll display on the left of his weblog is something that I want too!).
