How do you protect against this?  In 1999, the United States was entered by 475 million people, 125 million vehicles, and 5 million maritime 40-foot containers. Meanwhile, 2.7 million undocumented immigrants are believed to enter the United States yearly. Total annual U.S. cocaine consumption can fit in 15 forty-foot containers.

This report says that the Washington state instance of mad cow disease the first incident in the US.  Wow.  I guess they forgot the thousands of game animals across the US that have had a variant of mad cow over the last several years.  We have it, it just jumped the species barrier.

Question:  if a win in Iraq (exemplified by Saddam's capture) was extremely important for American security, why are we in an Orange alert this holiday season?

What if next generation terror organizations had a decision loop that was slooooow.  So sluggish (like a plant) that it was impossible to see without time lapse photography (in that slow action provides protection against detection)?  Given that we are used to faaaaaaaaast action.  Quick decisions.  Activity, movement, and communication.  Can we even imagine or respect an enemy that is much, much slower than we are?  What if despite its slowness, these next generation terrorist organizations are acutely aware, globally communicative, and decisive?  Good questions.

I was reading Elizabeth Spier's blog at her new gig and saw an item about a person confronting Roy Cohn in the 80's.  I remember doing something similar in Vienna in the late 70's.  Jimmy Carter was negotiating a SALT treaty and I, the anti-Carter teen that I was at the time, got within feet of the limo the Carters were in.  A limo came right by.  I saw Amy Carter in the back seat with the window down partway.  She looked at me.  I looked at her.  I stuck my tongue out and razzed her.  She was shocked.  Sorry Amy.

I recommend "I Capture the Castle."   An excellent movie.  Marie and I saw it earlier this year on a night out.  Wonderful date movie.

Wow.  K-Logs is still growing (nearing 1,000 members -- many are senior people in organizations across the globe or amazing innovative individuals).  This is probably one of the top weblog related groups on the Web today.  Nice.  I will do my best to get this moving again.  PS.  Looks like Dave is having as much early success with his RSS group.  However, there is a long way between 100 and 900.

Is Scripting News broken?  I guess not.  Shanti is fixing his bot rather than shutting it down.  At 80 Mbits per hour(estimate -- 10 Mbytes per hour based on 100 k request for an 100 k file), that is alot of data.  Any want to price that for me?

William Lind, a military historian, has a 4GW (4th generation warfare) viewpoint on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that is worth reading.

Understanding 4GW.

How to fight 4GW.

How to fight 4GW (part 2)

One of his major points:  we lost these wars when we destroyed the Afghan and Iraqi states and turned them into a lawless mess.  He maintains that it is very hard to rebuild a state once it is destroyed and we will leave well before these countries are stable states again (the implication:  this would turn Iraq and Afghanistan into Lebanons).

Interesting service called psAHOY.  It can select quotes from within posts or webpages.  This may not work, but this is what a dissected webpage looks like.  Not much information out there on this.  A combination of cache and bookmarklets would make a nice research tool (and could automate footnoting for electronic documents).

Terry points to his rural telco cooperative that offers ADSL+ services (1 Mb Internet, DVD quality cable, and phone service).  Nice!  This really points to where things are going in telecom.  AOL, EarthLink, MSN, and other ISPs are going to have to become VoIP telcos, cable companies, and ISPs in order to survive.  It is interesting to imagine what could be done when you combine these three capabilities into a single service.

Next Level is the only company that has proven its ability to deliver a cable-competitive, full-service bundle using ADSL+ technology. Utilizing Next Level’s commercially proven platform, SCRTC members are able to deliver more than 1 Mbps of high-speed data, two streams of DVD quality digital video and integrated voice service at distances beyond 10,000 feet from the nearest central office or remote terminal.

“Next Level equipment cost us less than $1000 per sub, and today we’re delivering digital TV, high-speed Internet and telephone services over 1200 subscribers. We also heard that Next Level was a VDSL company, but the equipment works really well for ADSL. We honestly feel that our digital video services are higher quality, easier to install and more reliable than offerings from cable and satellite companies.”
