NYTimes. This is a catch 22. The longer we put off direct election due to violence. The more intense the violence will become.

CNN. Deficit close to $500 b this year. Next year is projected at 65% of that. My guess it will be more than that. The jobless recovery will continue (offshoring is in full swing). The tax cuts will decimate revenue (bad government). Here's a question: what if the US demand economy dried up? Absolute chaos. We are in a classic example of imperial overstretch, except in this case the world is reliant on us.

Like it or not, people in the south (I lived in NC for 7 years) and west (I lived there 6 years -- CO, TX, AR -- not CA which is a world unto itself) are often very untrusting of northeastern politicians. This is a gut issue and not one discussed unless you live there a while.

Kottke. Corporations are defined under the law as persons. When analyzed against standard psychiatric tests, corporations look like psychopaths. Question: Are corporations role models for the people that run them or are they a reflection of attitudes and morals of those in command? I think right now, unfortunately, the former is true. It explains Enron, Tyco, and all of the other major corporate failures quite nicely.

I don't think the press should be blamed for Dean's and Clark's problems. Traditional media is a big dumb beast. It doesn't think, it acts. It can slam you and build you up. It isn't going away anytime soon.
A demonstrated ability to tame the media in the run-up to the presidency is a must. It will still be there after after the presidency is gained: ripping you down, taking you off message, and denigrating your efforts. It can also be used to push your agenda.
Dean and Clark have proven that they are easy targets for the beast. How do you think either man would fare as a president?
NOTE: If Dean can turn it around, ala Clinton (re: Flowers), and win in NH. He probably deserves to win. He has proven he can tame the beast.

Wired. A couple quotes from people that have seen Edwards recently:
"He has a lot of charisma," Debbie McCrum, 54, said after hearing Edwards speak in Gorham, New Hampshire on Saturday. "He makes me think of Bill Clinton. He's like Clinton, but with integrity."
"I think that was the strongest political speech I have ever seen in my life," said Tom Reynolds, a Nashua senior citizen. "I think he can go head to head with George Bush better than any other candidate."

The real problem with Dean and Kerry is electability. In my view, I think the election would likely look like this map. Edwards would change the dynamic. The NH tracking poll has Edwards surging to 16% (ahead of Clark at 15% and just behind Dean at 20%). Edwards is on his way to win the #2 spot in NH. He exudes electability.

EE Times. Free satellite TV surging in Iraq. Turning on the lights. There are no official statistics, but STMicroelectronics says it sold more than 2.5 million chips between April and December to distributors that said they were building digital satellite decoders for shipment to Iraq. One Chinese company, Sichuan Changhong Electric Co. Ltd., boasted on its Web site just eight days after the Hussein regime fell that it had put a batch of 100,000 DVB-S set-tops on a plane traveling from Chengdu/Shuangliu Airport to Iraq.
