Pakistan and China in joint counter-terrorism exercises. Hedging bets. Also, rumors that Pakistan has rejected the US request to send troops to Iraq (it bought its way out with the recent al Qaeda arrests).

WP. US uses Iraqi oil money to pay Halliburton ($1.64 b from Iraqi funds) et. al. Analysis of those and other records shows that 19 of 37 major contracts funded by Iraqi money went to U.S. companies and at least 85 percent of the total $2.26 billion was obligated to U.S. companies. Lots of money to be made...

A dawn attack on a nexus of pipelines at al-Fateha 50 miles west of Kirkuk caused a huge explosion and fire (the smoke could be seen from Kirkuk). Exports via Turkey have be interdicted again. In combination with a deadly weekend attack on a oil storage facility in Baghdad and a rupture of the southern pipeline (due to previous damage by saboteurs), the disruption of August has begun.
