IHT.  OPEC loses its clout.  "Prices are moving independently from whatever OPEC decides," said Nordine Ait-Laoussine, a former Algerian oil minister and OPEC president. "OPEC can't do anything more today." If OPEC is repeating calls for lower oil prices, it's because the cartel knows from bitter history that at some point, high prices will hurt because they'll slow world growth and lead to a sudden price collapse.  There is still an OPEC, but it is a Shadow OPEC

Christopher Allbritton...it's becoming more and more dangerous to work here.  The feeling of tension and menace while traveling around is palpable.  BTW, it's pretty funny a correspondent for Time magazine is still asking for donations on his website.  It was pretty innovative of him to use public donations to get a job.

CSM.  Global terror, local war.  The bottom line is they are not connected," says Bruce Hoffman, a terror expert at the RAND Corp. in Washington. "This has been a particularly bad two weeks."  This is true to a large extent.  However, terrorism as a technique of war is undergoing theoretical improvement.  Connecting local efforts into a global effect is a very important part of that evolution.   However, if you don't think terrorism and guerrilla war can become more effective through improvements in theory, join Max Boot and use the 1898 guerrilla war in the Phillippines as an example of US success against insurgents.

Wired.  This is very cool.  Ghana gets a fabbed lab.  "The Fab Lab is a really early prototype of a personal Replicator," said Sherry Lassiter, CBA program manager. "The Fab Lab can't push molecules around, but it can do maybe 10 percent of what a personal Replicator might do."

WSJ.  Intelligence officer on the front lines.  "This is such a barbaric place. I cannot fathom the depths the Iraqis endured to reach this level," he wrote.   "I just don't see how they could remain loyal to the insurgency, but it is possible. In this culture, Allah trumps all. Religious loyalties can never be questioned," he says.

Interesting account how improvements in police doctrine have shut down the classic tactics of non-violent protest.  This is another example of how seemingly simple conflict can be completely transformed by improvements in theory
