AP. The LA counter-terrorism chief is an ex-reporter? LOL. Is counter-terrorism mostly PR? File this in the "to hell in a handbasket" category. The head of the Police Department's counterterrorism bureau was detained by federal authorities Thursday after trying to board a flight at Los Angeles International Airport with a loaded handgun in his carryon luggage. John Miller, an ABC-TV reporter before he was hired for the security job, was off duty and heading to New York with his family when Transportation Security Administration officials discovered the .38-caliber handgun in his bag, TSA spokesman Nico Melendez said.

Question. I am digging into counter-insurgency militias (aka death squads). Given:
- the assassinations of four anti-US Sunni clerics in Baghdad last week,
- the appointment of Negroponte to Iraq (he ran the Contras and Honduran/El Salvadorian death squads between 1981 and 1985), and
- Bush the elder's role in running Central American strategy during the 80's (he is likely advising his son on ways to resolve Iraq).
We are likely to see full blown counter-insurgency militias in Iraq soon (it seems to have already started). Any reports on the strategy and theory behind the use of militias like this would help. Recommendations welcome!
