Veteran's day.  My thoughts go out to the families of those families that have lost loved ones in Iraq.  I also hope that those that survive, despite the grave wounds that are all too common in today's warfare, get the support they need...

BG.  US military casulaties with significant injuries are arriving at Landstuhl Germany jumped from 30-40 a day to over 100 a day due to Fallujah.  Due to body armor there is a much higher ratio of serious injury to deaths than in the past (which tends to understate the severity of the conflict).  This is also a casualty rate substantially higher than the US military has reported in theater (UPDATE:  The military has revised their figures to something that is more in line with other data).

EPRI report on a smart power upgrade to the US system.  It would also help against a system attack by global guerrillas.

"According to the latest edition of the Electricity Technology Roadmap that was spearheaded by EPRI in collaboration with many other groups, the societal benefits of upgrading the transmission infrastructure will far outweigh the costs. A truly smart power system, it says, would include automated capabilities to optimize performance, anticipate problems and be self-healing.

"Development and full deployment of a modern 'smart' electricity system in the U.S. would cost the average household less than $5 per month," says Kurt Yeager, CEO of EPRI. "This cost could be offset many times over by immediate reliability and efficiency improvements. In fact, modernizing the electricity infrastructure could translate into at least $3 trillion per year in additional U.S. GDP by 2025."

There was a great 2 segment report on Rutan's space program on 60 minutes this last Sunday.  Nice video.  Design and expertise over computing power.  Also, Richard Branson claimed yesterday that he anticipates being ready to put people into space for 3.5 hours in 2.5 years.  Wow.  This is faster than my timeline.
