Oil pipelines near Baghdad were attacked twice today. This is likely in response to bin Laden's call for more attacks on pipelines yesterday. Zarqawi's group claimed responsibility for one of the attacks. This is an example of al Qaeda's new "pull" leadership style pioneered by Zarqawi (llikely by accident). The organization doesn't control the day-to-day of the many guerrilla groups in the insurgency, but it can set things in motion.

The Economist. Iraqi gasoline shortages have as much to do with the subsidized price as guerrilla activity.

One note on Rumsfeld's gaff in Kuwait. Rumsfeld was reluctant to put armor on all of the vehicles in Iraq because he was caught in a conflict between his force transformation project and the realities of force protection in Iraq. Force transformation is based on the idea of light forces that can be easily transported to global hot-spots. Additional armor wrecks this plan by making vehicles too heavy to transport.
