Verizon posts a $50,000 reward for information. It also makes the case for a fiber upgrade. The older copper wires are more difficult to fix since crews must splice each of hundreds of the copper cables individually using special equipment. "It's painstaking," Hoey said. "Within a cable there are individuals lines that have to be repaired one at a time and spliced together, which is why it takes time."

MEonline. ARAMCO lulls itself to sleep. "Our facilities are protected by technology, by physical barriers, by cameras. We have over 5,000 security guards hired by the company itself," he said. "Over and above that, we have government security." Iraq has over 3x the number of corporate and governmental guards (including dedicated US troops) and it can't begin to keep its facilities safe.

Richard Clarke has an interesting interview on NPR. He created a fictional retrospective of a series of attacks on the US (published in the Atlantic magazine this month). In some ways, he is on the right track, but unfortunately (despite that he and his team at Good Harbor Consulting are readers of Global Guerrillas) he makes a major analytical error. He still assumes terrorism will follow the randomness of pre-Iraq historical patterns. The only change he sees: there will be more terrorism in more locations. His message: everything is vulnerable. This makes me wonder what Good Harbor actually sells to its clients. Pure fear?

Reuters. Mark Thatcher's deal indicates the level of insider support for the failed coup. The son of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher pleaded guilty on Thursday to a role in a foiled mercenary plot in west Africa under a plea bargain to avoid prison.
