 Juan Cole stumbled onto the truth a couple of years ago:

We who live in the real world are aware that literacy, mass communications, urbanization, the spread of engineering training, the internet and other developments have contributed to what social scientists call "social and political mobilization." The peoples of the world are not illiterate villagers anymore, as they largely were in the heydey of the British Raj. They aren't politically helpless and they won't put up with foreigners "policing" them, not for very long.

 The Belmont Club predicts a sweeping victory in Iraq, again...  If I had a dollar for all the times conservative pundits claimed victory in Iraq, I would be a rich man...

It will probably be many months before the insurgency finally flickers out.. But for the first time since terrorist warfare was developed and perfected in the Algerian war it has met its match on the battlefield. The vanquishing arms may have been American, but the heart that drove it was in large measure Iraqi.
