 Energy:  The failure of defense and rapid repair

 Turkish officials blamed the PKK for damage to an oil pipeline in the Batman province.  This is particularly worrisome given the importance of the new BTC pipeline.

The simple fact of the matter is that ever tighter economic integration makes local problems global problems.  At this juncture in history, almost any group with a grievance (whether it is economic neglect of an ethnic minority or a police crack down on a gang's illicit activities) can damage the world's economy.

 WT.  Oils at $57 a barrel.  Gas at $2.40  Welcome to the new floor in energy prices.

"Traditionally, the hedgers and speculators have ruled the commodity markets. But now a new behemoth has stepped in — the institutional ... fund manager" who buys and holds oil contracts indefinitely without selling, said Tom Nugent, an analyst with Kudlow & Co.

"This entrant has trillions of dollars of assets under management and is changing the landscape," driving up oil prices dramatically and perhaps indefinitely, he said. "This monster has staggering geopolitical consequences that are currently being played out."
